Religious Education

Religious Education is an integral part of life at Holy Trinity and permeates all areas of the school and its Curriculum. Our teaching is based on the beliefs of the Catholic Church, its traditions and the Gospel values of Jesus. Holy Trinity’s Torch Values are built upon the Gospel Values.

Student Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is central to everything that we do inside the classroom and outside. We have a strong focus on building ‘well-rounded children.

Literacy

We are widely regarded as one of the leading schools in the region for literacy. Our approach is unique and hands on.

Numeracy

One of the pillars of the strong education we offer at Holy Trinity. We make numeracy engaging by bringing it to life with real-world problem-solving.

Visual Arts

Creativity is a vital attribute for 21st century learners and we understand this. Our visual arts program is something we are intrinsicly proud of.

Digital Technology

Technology is an inescapable medium in today’s digital age and with a very healthy eye on balance we immerse our students in a range of devices including ipads, laptops desktop computers, interactive televisions and lots more.

Performing Arts/Italian

Students are immersed in the Italian language and culture through a range of activities, including speaking, singing, listening, reading and writing.

Physical Education

Our aim is to promote healthy bodies and healthy minds through our brillaint P.E. program.

Music

Building self esteem and confidence through music performance is the aim of our Music program at Holy Trinity.

Young Engineers

Our Young Engineers program provides an opportunity for our students to develop their critical thinking skills whilst developing their skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Student Wellbeing

At Holy Trinity we have a holistic approach to student wellbeing and recognise the strong links between student wellbeing and learning outcomes. As part of the broader Catholic Education community we have a shared mission -

We are committed to educating the whole person to their individual potential and we invest heavily in teaching our children the core ‘TORCH’ values which underpin our school-based Values and Social Skills Program: Tolerance, Optimism, Respect, Confidence and Honesty.
Holy Trinity’s school-based Values and Social Skills Program is implemented through a variety of programs and initiatives. These include our Prep to Year 6 Friendship Groups Program, our Buddies Program, Transition Program, and through a classroom-based program that teaches social competencies and skills at the cognitive level of the students. Through the classroom-based program students are involved in a variety of activities that are designed to develop their social and emotional learning as well as promote a deeper understanding and demonstration of our key values.

Our Transition Program involves all students from Prep to Year 6 in a series of activities designed to build confidence and resilience. These include topics such as moving on and changing, making new friends, maintaining contacts, reflecting on the past, and looking forward with optimism. Students have the chance to share their concerns and questions about the coming year and to receive encouragement and support.

The Buddies Program at Holy Trinity was developed through The Alannah & Madeline Foundation Better Buddies Framework, an initiative designed to create friendly and caring primary school communities where bullying is reduced. Better Buddies enables younger children to feel safe and cared for while older children feel valued and respected. The Preps and their buddies usually meet once a week for a special activity. The Buddies Program focuses on the social situations which build students’ resilience and help reduce bullying. It addresses this by encouraging children to form positive and supportive relationships with one another.
In the Buddies Program, Prep students and Year 6 students buddy up and learn the values of caring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference, including others and responsibility. All children in the school learn these values, along with the school’s core TORCH values, through formal and informal activities and through their participation in the whole school Friendship Groups Program.

Our Friendship Groups Program has been running since 2003. There are 16 Friendship groups, each with approximately 18 students from Prep to Year Six. Prep students and their Year Six Buddies are placed together in the same group.
Teachers meet with their group every fortnight for a session that typically involves a game and an activity based on a social skill and the TORCH value of current focus.
Through their participation and interaction with other students across the levels, children are taught strategies to help build resilience and equip them with social competencies that will assist them to become full and active members of the community. The program encompasses a common language and a set of shared values that are promoted and developed throughout the school, in classrooms, on the playground and in family life. Through this program students learn the meaning of our key values of Tolerance, Optimism, Respect, Confidence and Honesty, and how to apply these values in their lives.

Restorative Practices.
Holy Trinity is a Restorative Practices school. “Restorative Practices is a whole school approach to promoting resilience and building positive relationships. It is focused on helping young people become aware of the impact of their behaviour on others through personal accountability and learning from a conflict situation. An important component of restorative practices is the focus on restoring relationships after harm has been done.”
The Holy Trinity Discipline and Anti-Bullying Policy reflects the school’s focus on the restorative process and the development of trusting and supportive relationships. The central core TORCH value of respect underpins the school’s code of behaviour for all students - RESPECT for self, for others, for property, for the environment and for learning.

Meditation and Mindfulness
As a school, Holy Trinity strives to maintain an atmosphere that is safe, calm and supportive. Meditation is timetabled for the whole school three times a week and additional sessions may be held in classrooms throughout the day. Mindfulness activities are also often included as part of the Values and Social Skills Program.

Victorian Health Achievement Program
Holy Trinity is proud to be part of the Victorian Healthy Schools Achievement Program. As a school we place great importance on healthy minds and bodies. All students and families are encouraged to participate in regular before school activities, walk to school days and other initiatives such as Active April. Students are encouraged to have drink bottles on their tables throughout the day and have a fruit or veggie snack each morning. Classes have regular brain breaks and a sensory room is also available for children needing a more structured break from the classroom.
As of the end of 2018, Holy Trinity has been awarded for achieving the benchmarks in the Victorian Healthy Schools Achievement Program for - Safe Environments, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Physical Activity and Movement, Sun Protection, and Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs.

eSmart
Holy Trinity School is committed to the wellbeing and safety of all its students and staff. This is supported by a whole school approach to student wellbeing including cyber safety. Holy Trinity’s eSmart policy encompasses agreements, procedures and acceptable behaviours related to cybersafety, cyberbullying, cyber-risks, use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and mobile devices.
Holy Trinity School’s eSmart policy is underpinned by “The National Safe Schools Framework” vision that “All Australian schools are safe, supportive and respectful teaching and learning communities that promote student well-being.” NSSF, 2013
Cyber safety units are incorporated into the curriculum through inquiry units with a whole school focus in term one of each year. The school also promotes cybersafety through participation in “Harmony Day” and ‘National Day Against Violence and Bullying’.

Additional Programs

Literacy

Literacy is a two hour block that occurs over 5 two hour sessions across the week. The Prep to Yr 4 Literacy time consists of a one hour Reading and a one hour Writing lesson. The Year 5 and 6 level have a two hour combined Reading and Writing block. During this time students develop their knowledge, skills and strategies along a continuum according to the Victorian English Curriculum in Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Students are taught to become critical thinkers of Reading and Writing and self manage their learning through a variety of multi literacies. The planning and teaching for our students is a shared responsibility by all teaching staff. Students’ learning progression is tracked along the Victorian Curriculum continuum that helps inform their next learning. Students’ needs are central to our planning and teaching for English at Holy Trinity. Through a whole school approach to planning and teaching English, we aim to deliver high impact teaching practices that are essential for our students to become lifelong learners.

Numeracy

Maths at Holy Trinity Primary School has evolved over the years. Teacher have become equipped with the latest online and hands on assessment tools to track student learning. Once teachers have information regarding their students needs, they plan together to design a range of engaging, fun and useful learning experiences. Students have the opportunity to complete simpler tasks using hands on materials if needs. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to be further challenged during these learning experiences, thus catering for the broad range of abilities in the Maths classroom.

Visual Arts

At Holy Trinity Primary School, we recognise the important role of the Visual Arts in the development of the whole child. Students are encouraged and guided to explore their creativity, use their imagination and acquire new skills.

Students participate in a 180 minute Visual Art lesson once a fortnight. In these sessions the children are given the opportunity to experiment with a variety of materials, techniques and equipment. They are encouraged to discover, explore, play, create and solve problems.

At Holy Trinity we also offer ‘Students as Artists in School’ program. Students selected from Grade Five and Six and Three and Four for this program have the opportunity to participate in an extra one hour weekly art class for up to eight weeks. These classes are offered to various students throughout the year based on particular needs. These classes can be aimed at Extension artwork, Developing Skills in Art or Social and Emotional skills. During these classes the students design and create projects to be displayed around the school.

Every alternate year Holy Trinity holds an Art show. The students create artworks to be displayed at the show based on a specific theme. This is always a very exciting community event.

There are also opportunities for student involvement in community projects such as the banner for the Knox Festival and participation in local Art Exhibitions.

A small selection of students work is also exhibited at the Victorian Catholic Schools Visual Arts Exhibition each year in March..

At Holy Trinity the importance of Visual Arts Education is highly valued. It is hoped the students leave our school believing that anything is possible and if they can dream it they can create it.

Digital Technology

The Digital Technologies (Digitech) is a specialist subject designed to provide students with many of the skills and understanding i to access the digital world we live in the 21st Century. Cybersafety, coding, robotics and using our school Google accounts to enhance our learning are just a few of the areas that we focus on at Holy Trinity. Students participate in regular Digitech sessions in our state of the art Tech Lab as well as having the opportunity to access Chromebooks, Interactive Televisions, desktop computers and classroom iPads.

Performing Arts/Italian

The goal of the Italian Language Program at Holy Trinity is to foster an appreciation of another culture as well as our own and to promote and develop language as communication. Students learn that the central goal of learning a language is communication. An awareness of this and development of skills is taught by listening, speaking, reading, writing, singing, dancing and performing. Another element of the program is learning functional language through the use of gesture. Many of the activities covered during the school year will not only enrich students’ knowledge of the Italian culture, but also aim to foster independence and encourage risk taking in language use. The Italian activities are also designed to be integrated with the Performing Arts curriculum with emphasis first and foremost, on participation and enjoyment!

Pyhs Ed

Physical Education is taught from Prep to Year 6 as weekly lessons taken by a specialist PE teacher. The aim of the program is to develop our students, skills, knowledge and understandings of movement and to foster a love of lifelong physical activity. The focus is on developing students proficiency in their Fundamental Movement skills and applying strategic concepts when
participating in games as well as demonstrating positive behaviors of cooperation, teamwork and fair play. This is developed through programs such as; Run, Jump, Throw- Athletics;Tumble, Turn and Twist - Gymnastics;, Jump Rope for Heart, Major and Minor Games using a Game Sense approach, also Swimming and Water Safety activities, Ball Handling and Sport Education
units.
Some highlights of our PE program each year include our Year 3-6 House Athletics Carnival and whole school Twilight Sports event in term 1 and House Fun Run in term 2. Our House Captains and Health/Fitness & Sport Leaders
support our program through assisting with the organization of these events.
Holy Trinity is a member of School Sport Victoria and students have the opportunity to represent the school in Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals. Our senior students also participate in Interschool sport round robin days in winter and summer sports.

Young Engineers

All students in Years 3 to 6 participate in the Young Engineers Lego enrichment program as part of our school’s commitment to develop students’ skills in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students work together to build a variety of everyday models that develops their understanding of scientific concepts and why various machines and toys are built the way they are. A typical lesson will involve students learning about a STEM concept, such as centrifugal force, then applying this knowledge to the build of a Amusement Park Carousel.
